Demostrations

A great way of seeing what is possible with Smart Sparrow is to look at several of the Demos on their website from various licensees, including those in the higher education sector.

Smart Sparrow contains “Loops”, which are repositories of lessons, usually available for adaptation. Check out the following Loops for some example Smart Sparrow lessons:

  • Smart Sparrow Loop – Smart Sparrow’s own repository containing some well-designed adaptive lessons
  • Griffith University Loop – A small, but growing repository of lessons made at Griffith University that have been made available for adaptation
  • BEST Network – The Biomedical Education Skills and Training Network contains dozens of Smart Sparrow lessons created by a community of experts in biomedical education.
  • Adaptive Mechanics Network – Example Engineering lessons built with Smart Sparrow. To join this network, you first need to register using your Smart Sparrow account.
  • Inspark Education – Example Science lessons built with Smart Sparrow. To join this network, you first need to register using your Smart Sparrow account.

Reflective Activity

Think about a time when you’ve had a one-on-one consultation with a student. How did this conversation differ to how you deliver a lecture to a larger group? How did you address questions the student asked? How did you address misconceptions the student may have had?

It’s likely you will have provided the student with a detailed answer. In the case of addressing misconceptions, you probably would have helped the student to reach the correct answer on their own. This is an example of adaptive learning. You’ve tailored the way you deliver your materials for that specific student. Consider this approach when designing for online adaptive learning in Smart Sparrow.

(Alternative activity: could also ask the user to take a look at the examples above and think about any materials in their own course that could be suitable as an adaptive lesson)
